PM Modi to inaugurate new terminal at Port Blair Airport on Tuesday

Covering an area of approximately 40,800 sqm, the building will have the capacity to handle about 50 lakh passengers annually.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair via video conferencing on July 18. The new facility, built at a cost of approximately Rs 710 crore, is aimed at improving connectivity to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India.

The project is part of the government's broader efforts to improve infrastructure and connectivity in the region. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has stated that enhancing connectivity infrastructure is a key priority for the government, and the new terminal building is expected to play a vital role in facilitating travel to and from the islands.

The new "shell-shaped" terminal building, which covers an area of 41,000 square meters, has several modern amenities, including a larger check-in area, more immigration counters, and improved security facilities. It also features several retail and dining outlets, as well as lounges for passengers.

The building will be equipped with 28 check-in counters, three passenger boarding bridges and four conveyor belts. It also has sustainability features such as double insulated roofing system, LED lighting, and low heat gain glazing. The airport will have 100 per cent natural lighting for 12 hours a day through skylights along the roof.

Other features of the new terminal building at the Port Blair aimed at sustainability are rainwater catchment in an underground water tank, on-site sewage treatment plant with 100 per cent of treated wastewater reused for landscaping and a 500 KW capacity solar power plant.

The inauguration of the new terminal building by the Prime Minister is an important milestone for the development of infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and is expected to drive tourism and economic growth in the region.
