WFI chief Brij Bhushan gets interim bail in sexual harassment case

In a major setback to the complainant wrestlers, Delhi's Rouse Avenue court has granted two-day interim bail to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the sidelined chief of the Wrestling Federation of India, in connection with allegations of sexual harassment by multiple women wrestlers. The relief has been granted on a personal bond of Rs 25,000.

The court also granted bail to suspended WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar in the same case.

The judge urged the media to carry out responsible reporting and warned against misquoting the court. Two layers of security, policemen in civil dress and paramilitary forces were deployed outside the courtroom.

Delhi Police had recommended the cancellation of the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case before the Patiala House Court, citing lack of evidence. A team of Delhi Police also filed a chargesheet in FIRs by wrestlers accusing Singh of sexual harassment.

The Delhi Police had filed a charge sheet against the six-time MP on June 15 under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Tomar was charged with offences under IPC sections 109 (abetment of any offence, if the act abetted is committed in consequence, and where no express provision is made for its punishment), 354, 354A and 506 (criminal intimidation).

The government had assured the wrestlers that a chargesheet would be filed against Singh by June 15, following which they halted their protest.
