The ongoing by-elections in India are being considered a crucial event as they mark the first face-off between the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the newly formed opposition coalition known as the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
These by-elections serve as a preview to the upcoming assembly polls later this year and the general elections in 2024.
- Voting for the by-elections commenced at 7 a.m. on Tuesday in seven assembly constituencies spread across six states: Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tripura, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.
The seats being contested include Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura, Puthuppally in Kerala (vacant due to the demise of Oommen Chandy), and Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh (vacant after the resignation of Samajwadi Party MLA Dara Singh Chauhan, who later joined the BJP).
Additionally, Dhupguri in north Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand, and Bageshwar in Uttarakhand are also holding by-elections today.
The results of these by-elections will be announced on Friday (September 8), as stated by the Election Commission.
