India won't compromise on farmers' interests: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, calling them the foundation of the nation’s progress.

Speaking at the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi said:

For us, the interest of farmers remains our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it.

Modi released a commemorative coin and a centenary memorial stamp dedicated to renowned Indian geneticist Professor M.S. Swaminathan on the occasion of his birth centenary and also inaugurated the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference on the same day.

His remarks come amid tensions over the Trump administration’s decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent. India has strongly rejected the move. The new tariffs will take effect 21 days after the order is signed, except for shipments already in transit and cleared before 17 September.
