Sarnaik proposes shifting Dahisar toll naka to ease traffic

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has proposed shifting the Dahisar Toll Naka about two kilometers ahead near the Western Hotel to ease heavy traffic congestion at Mumbai’s northern entry point. The move aims to reduce vehicle bottlenecks, fuel wastage, and improve environmental and commuter conditions.

Currently located on the Mumbai-Mira-Bhayander border, the toll plaza causes severe traffic snarls for over 1.5 million residents of Mira-Bhayander and thousands of daily commuters to Mumbai. Despite efforts by NHAI, Mumbai Police, RTO, and MBMC, the problem persists.

In a letter to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Sarnaik stressed that the toll plaza’s current location within Mira-Bhayander city limits is untenable. He suggested relocating it near the Western Hotel, which would streamline traffic, cut emissions, and allow residents to travel toll-free within the city.

“When Eknath Shinde was Chief Minister, he took commendable steps by scrapping several toll plazas and providing toll exemptions for smaller vehicles. We now request a similar intervention to address the persistent issues at Dahisar,” Sarnaik said.

After inspecting the area with officials, Sarnaik found no lasting solution so far but expressed confidence that the proposed shift would ease pressure on this key transit route. Deputy CM Shinde has assured a high-level meeting will be held soon to discuss the proposal, which, if approved, will improve traffic flow, reduce fuel use, and enhance commuting between Mumbai and Mira-Bhayander.
