Acclaimed director Anik Dutta dies of terrace fall: Kolkata Police probe foul play

Acclaimed Bengali filmmaker and National Award winner Anik Dutta died on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, after falling from the sixth-floor terrace of a residence in the Hindustan Park area of Kolkata. He was rushed to a private hospital in Dhakuria in a critical condition but could not be saved. Police have launched a formal investigation and have not yet ruled out foul play, leaving unanswered the question that has gripped the Bengali film industry: did Anik Dutta fall, or was he pushed?

The exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain deeply unclear, and police from the Gariahat Police Station are treating the case with serious scrutiny. Authorities are examining whether the fall was accidental, whether it was a case of suicide, or whether someone else was involved. It has not yet been established why Dutta had gone to the rooftop in the middle of the afternoon. His former wife Sandhi Dutta, when contacted by media, confirmed that an incident had taken place but declined to comment further.

Upon receiving the news on May 27, 2026, actor Jeetu Kamal, director Srijit Mukherji, and actress Manasi Sinha rushed to the hospital. Born into a distinguished Kolkata family, Dutta was the grandson of Priyanath Dutta, founder of the Hooghly Docking and Engineering Company, and had studied at St. Xavier's School and St. Xavier's College before spending several years in the advertising industry prior to his transition into feature filmmaking.

Anik Dutta made his directorial debut with Bhooter Bhabishyat in 2012, a ghost comedy blending supernatural storytelling with sharp political satire that is widely considered a benchmark in Bengali cinema. His subsequent works included Ashchorjyo Prodeep, Borunbabur Bondhu (2019), and Aparajito (2022), a tribute to the making of Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali that won two National Film Awards in 2024. His most recent release was Joto Kando Kolkatatei (2025), and he was reportedly working on Aparajito 2 at the time of his death.
