Petrol, Diesel prices hiked by over ₹2 again across India's major cities

Retail fuel prices were revised upward across India on Monday, 25 May 2026, with petrol and diesel rates rising by over two rupees per litre in all four major metro cities, effective May 25, 2026. The revision marks the fourth hike in less than two weeks, one of the sharpest single-day upward adjustments in recent times and is expected to exert pressure on transportation costs, consumer inflation, and household budgets in urban centres. With the latest revision, cumulative increases in petrol and diesel prices are almost Rs 7.5 per litre since fuel rate revision resumed on May 15 after a prolonged freeze.

In Delhi, petrol prices rose by Rs 2.61 to reach Rs 102.12 per litre, while diesel climbed by Rs 2.71 to Rs 95.20 per litre. Mumbai saw petrol touch Rs 111.21 per litre, up by Rs 2.72, with diesel rising Rs 2.81 to Rs 97.83. Kolkata recorded the steepest petrol increase among the four metros, with prices rising Rs 2.87 to Rs 113.51 per litre, as diesel climbed Rs 2.80 to Rs 99.82. In Chennai, petrol was priced at Rs 107.77 per litre, a rise of Rs 2.46, while diesel increased by Rs 2.57 to Rs 99.55 per litre.

Fuel prices in India are revised daily by oil marketing companies based on international crude oil benchmarks and prevailing foreign exchange rates. Consumers have been advised to verify prices at local pumps, as applicable state taxes and dealer commissions may cause variation across regions. As the Iran-US tension prevail, the situation is likely to get worse.

As of the time of reporting, no official statement has been issued by oil marketing companies including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, or Hindustan Petroleum citing the specific reasons behind this revision. The hike comes at a time of heightened sensitivity to cost-of-living pressures and is likely to draw political attention in the days ahead.
