The Indian Railway may stop providing pillows, blankets, sheets and towels to passengers travelling in AC Trains and coaches even after the pandemic is over.
While a formal decision is yet to be taken, this issue has been discussed with higher officials on video conference earlier this week.
According to some sources, a committee will soon be formed to decide what to do with mega laundries, set up to wash the linen. The Railways is estimated to have spend Rs 40-50 per ever linen set. There are around 18 lakh linen set as per assumptions in circulation at present.
An official said that a blanket is kept for 48 months or simply 4 years and is washed once a month. Currently there no new linen sets being produced.
With the increase in cleanliness to avoid COVID-19, the linen sets must be washed every time used and the cost of washing can over tons of Crore, so the Railways might take this decision soon.
