Having being humiliated in the First Test Match despite having a lead, India kicked off the Boxing Day looking for a better performance without their Captain Virat Kohli who had left the squad for personal reasons. For the remainder of the series, Ajinkya Rahane is selected to be the captain of India.
Australian Captain Tim Paine won the toss and elected to bat first. They didn't had a great start and soon found themselves 38/3 with the loss of Joe Burns,Matthew Wade and Steve Smith. Burns and Smith both were dismissed for duck with the latter being dismissed by Ashwin again.
Then an 86 run stand for the 4th wicket between Marcus Labuschagne and Travis Head got Australia right back on track. However Soon after that Australia lost their momentum and lost Head and Labuschagne in the process after being dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
The Indian Bowlers kept the game tight and Australia were bowled out for 195 with Bumrah picking up 4 wickets for 56 Runs, Ashwin picking up 3 to his name and 2 wickets for Debutant Mohammed Siraj and 1 for Ravindra Jadeja.
Despite losing Mayank Agarwal in the very first over, the Indian Batsmens kept their nerves together and added 36 runs with no more loss of wickets at the end of Day 1.
