Following an intense race for the league title in Serie A,the two clubs from Milan locked horns against each other again on Sunday, merely just about a month later when they faced off in the Coppa Italia Quarter Finals where Zlatan Ibrahimovic collided with Romelu Lukaku. That game was won 2-1 by Inter in stoppage time as Zlatan was sent off in the second half.
This was for the first time since 2011 when these two meet in Milan Derby as the top two. After a recent drop in form from AC Milan had seen their rivals Inter Milan leapfrog them to the top of the table. Milan were the "home team" for this one(San Siro is the home of both clubs).
Inter Milan made a fast start and took the lead in the 5th minute through a header from Lautaro Martinez. His strike partner Romelu Lukaku swinged in a loose ball all to perfectly for Martinez, who just had to guide it in to make it 1-0.
Despite having over 60% possession and 14 shots throughout the game, AC Milan were unable to break down the Inter backline. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was denied twice by Inter keeper Samir Handanovic in the second half. The Inter captain was determined for a clean sheet.
A quick passing and superb display of teamwork led to the second goal for Inter. Ivan Perisic drived into the box from the left hand side, received a pass from Christian Eriksen and laid it out for Lautaro Martinez to tuck it away from close range in the 57th minute.
Romelu Lukaku then killed off the game in the 66th minute. Some stunning individual performance from the Big Belgium International allowed him to carry the ball long way without being closed down by Milan Skipper Romagnoli. He had time on his side and hitted his shot from the edge of the box, curling it into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
Inter Milan are now Unbeaten in their last six league games whereas AC Milan have suffered back to back league defeats. Milan will have to pick themselves up quickly as their Europa League second leg tie with Red Star Belgrade coming up in midweek. Though they have two away goals to their name, they can't take it lightly.
