COVID-19 Update: India records 1.61 lakh new cases; Maharashtra likely to announce lockdown in two days

The Second wave of COVID-19 in India keeps on getting stronger each day with no signs of slowing down just yet. In the span of 24 hours, the country reported a single day spike of 1,61,736 new cases. The country also saw a rise in number of deaths with 879 new fatalities.

India also setted up another unwanted figure, as the active caseload rose above 12 lakh for the first time since the pandemic began. Merely two months ago on February 12,2021 the active caseload was down to it's lowest at 1,35,926 cases. 

At present, India is the second worst hit nation by this pandemic after it once again surpassed Brazil in total cases. As of April 13, around 1,22,53,697 have recovered from the virus in the country as the recovery rate has fallen down to 89.5 per cent.

The worst affected state in the country, Maharashtra, reported a slight dip with 51,751 new cases, a day after it reported 63,294 cases. The state is likely to go undergo lockdown within a day or two.

Meanwhile Captial Delhi reported it's highest single day spike as well with 11,491 cases. According to the data shared by the health department, the city's positivity rate rose to 12.44 per cent from 9.43 per cent a day ago.

The Union Health Ministry have stated that Maharashtra and Delhi along with Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have shown a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases. These 10 states have accounted for around 83.02 per cent of new cases.
