President of India Ram Nath Kovind appoints Justice N.V. Ramana as next Chief Justice of India

On 6 April 2021, President Ram Nath Kovind signed the warrant of appointment and appointed Justice Nathulapati Venkata Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India. He will take oath on April 24.

Justice Ramana will serve as the 48th Chief Justice of India till August 26, 2022, serving a one-year-and-four-month term.

  • "In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Nathulapati Venkata Ramana, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th April, 2021," a government notification said.

CJI Bobde had recommended Ramana’s name as he is due to retire on April 23. As per the convention, a CJI is required to formally send in a request to this effect at least a month prior to demitting office.

  • As per the Memorandum of Procedure governing the appointment of members of the higher judiciary, "appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office".

Justice Ramana has previously served as a Permanent Judge of the AP High Court from June 27, 2000. He worked as Acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013, to May 20, 2013, then in the month of September the same year, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

  • Justice Ramana took charge as the judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014

He has also functioned as the Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government and the Standing Counsel for Railways in the Central Administrative Tribunal at Hyderabad besides serving as Additional Advocate General of Andhra Pradesh.
