Two arrested for possessing 7 kgs of Natural Uranium in Maharashtra

The Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Maharashtra Police have arrested two persons and seized over 7 kgs of Natural Uranium worth Rs 21.30 Crore.

The investigation was carried out by the Nagpada Unit of the ATS. The two accused have been identified as Jigar Pandya (27) and Abu Choudhary (31).

In February, the ATS received an information that Pandya who is a resident of Thane, was going to sell pieces of Uranium. The Agency then laid out a trap and caught him.

During interrogation he revealed that he got the pieces of Uranium from Choudhary, resident of Mankhurd in Mumbai who was in scarp business in Kurla.

The Uranium was then sent to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) at Trombay in Mumbai. The ATS in a statement then confirmed it was Uranium.

  • "A report was received that the substance is Natural Uranium. It is highly radioactive and dangerous to human life" said the ATS in the statement.

A case has been registered under the IPC and Atomic Energy Act and further investigations are in process.
