IMD issues Red Alert for Mumbai

 

On Wednesday Morning Mumbaikars woke up with the sound of thunder and rains as Monsoon officially arrived in Mumbai. Many parts of the city and surrounding areas witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall. The Monsoon season actually arrived two days earlier than expected said experts.

"Monsoon has arrived in Mumbai today, normal arrival date is 10th June every year so it has arrived prior to the average annual date" said Dr Jayanta Sarkar, IMD Mumbai Deputy Director General.

  • The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has now issued a red alert for the next four days in Mumbai, Thane, Palgar and Raigad. A red alert signifies a possibility of "Very Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rain".

As seen with Mumbai Rains, water-logging was soon reported from different parts of the city. Andheri, Dahisar, Khar Subway, Milan Subway, Hindmata were few of the places were knee high water log was seen. Heavy traffic was also seen on highways.

Local train services from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Thane, Vashi and Navi Mumbai was also suspended due to water-logging on railway tracks.

In the last 24 hours the Colaba Observatory recorded 77 mm of rains, while the Santacruz recorded 60 mm of rains. The IMD has also predicted that Mumbai and its surrounding areas will recieve over 350 mm of rainfall till Monday.
