On 1st July 2021, Mumbai Samachar completes its 200 years of non stop publication.

"Established in 1822, named Moombina Samachar, it was a weekly for the first ten years, then a biweekly and since 1855 a daily in the current format," says Nilesh Dave, Editor, as he traces the newspaper’s history. A simple down to earth Nilesh says he is proud of the editors who ran this for 190 years before him. He takes us to show his press which had still kept all the printing machines and the owners have maintained them well. The building of Mumbai Samachar is also over 250 years old and it is said that 1930 Times of India was printed at this press, informs dave.

First day First Edition of Mumbai Samachar

It is a matter of immense pride for all of us at Mumbai Samachar to reach this milestone. There are very two more publications across the world that have managed to survive for two hundred years and continued to stay relevant. What is also notable is that unlike other publications that have moved away from their mandate, we continue to maintain the policy established by our founders. While most newspapers have opted for one advertiser on the front page, we follow our traditional practice of having numerous small advertisements. Also our editorial policy has remained unchanged. What makes you special that you have managed to stay for 200 years? Our policies, we avoid sensationalizing news and maintain sobriety and independence of views, objectively reporting events in a fair and honest manner,” adds Nilesh Dave.

With a circulation of one hundred and fifty thousand, Mumbai Samachar is one the leading regional newspapers of India read by a large section of Gujrati speaking people. As part of its anniversary celebrations, it will distribute oxygen masks to traffic constables of Mumbai, one of the most polluted cities in the world. It will also start free Gujrati classes across Mumbai in a bid to promote the language.

Mumbai Samachar was founded by Fardunjee Marzban who was also a priest and is currently owned by the Cama family.
