Bihar CM Nitish Kumar resigns breaking BJP ties; joins Mahagathbandhan

On Tuesday, Nitish Kumar resigned as Chief Minister of Bihar, breaking his alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Nitish Kumar has been elected as the leader of Mahagathbandhan or the Grand Alliance (Left parties, RJD and Congress). The JD(U) will meet the Governor for a second time with Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav to seek a new term as the chief minister of Bihar.

After meeting the JD(U) leaders to discuss his next future political moves, Kumar had sought time from Governor Phagu Chauhan earlier today.

Around 4 pm, Kumar arrived at Raj Bhavan and met Governor Phagu Chauhan and apprised him of his decision to quit as the state chief minister.

Earlier today, at a JD(U) meeting, all of the party's MLAs and MPs backed chief minister Kumar's decision and stated their support for him. They also asserted their continued support for Kumar's decision.

Police personnel were seen deployed in force outside the chief minister's residence.

As per sources, many JD(U) legislators told chief minister Kumar in today's meeting that the alliance with the BJP had weakened them since 2020.
