Kashmir's first Multiplex cinema theatre inaugurated after 3 decades.

On Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha, inaugurated the valley's first multiplex in the city's Sonawar area, putting an end to moviegoers' three-decade wait to watch their favourite stars on the big screen.

Following the inauguration ceremony, the multiplex management held a special screening of Aamir Khan's 'Lal Singh Chaddha.'

The regular shows will start from September 30 with the screening of Vikram Vedha, starring Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan.

  • The first multiplex in Kashmir will have three theatres with a total seating capacity of 520 people. The location will also include a food court to promote local cuisine.

The opening of the multiplex, which will be operated by INOX, comes close on the heels of the Lieutenant Governor inaugurating multipurpose cinema halls -- one each in the twin Pulwama and Shopian districts.

  • The valley's cinema halls have reopened after three decades of closure due to threats and attacks by militants in 1989-90.

Until the late 1980s, the valley had nearly a dozen stand-alone cinema halls, but they had to shut down their businesses after being threatened by two militant outfits.

  • Though authorities attempted to reopen some of the theatres in the late 1990s, militants foiled such efforts in September 1999 by carrying out a deadly grenade attack on Regal Cinema in the heart of Lal Chowk.

Two other theatres — Neelam and Broadway — had opened their doors but had to shut business due to poor response.
