Crowds pay homage to late Kerala CM Oommen Chandy

Oommen Chandy's mortal remains arrive at Thiruvananthapuram airport. 

Former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's mortal remains arrived at Trivandrum International airport on Tuesday afternoon after he passed away at the age of 79 in Bengaluru. 

Although the remains reached Thiruvananthapuram airport at 2:30 pm, the funeral procession did not arrive at Puthupally House in Jagathy until 5 pm, with a large number of people gathering along the road and at his home. 

The public can pay their respects to the leader at several locations, including his residence, Puthupally House, Durbar Hall, St George Orthodox Cathedral, and KPCC headquarters Indira Bhavan on Tuesday.

Assisted by an air ambulance, Oommen Chandy's remains were moved from Chinmaya Mission Hospital in Bengaluru to Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. On Wednesday, a funeral procession will begin at 7 am, carrying his mortal remains from Thiruvananthapuram to Kottayam, where his body will be kept for public viewing at the Thirunakkara Maidan.

The funeral is scheduled to take place at St George Orthodox Church, Puthuppally, at 2 pm on Thursday. Oommen Chandy had been unwell since 2019 and was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru, where he passed away with his wife Mariyamma, son Chandy Oommen, and daughters Mariya and Achu by his side. 

Congress leaders such as Benny Behanan and KC Joseph are scheduled to visit the grieving family and pay their last respects to the leader at the hospital. The Kerala government has declared a public holiday on Tuesday as a mark of respect to the former Chief Minister.
