Western Railway on Tuesday (19 May 2026) launched a large-scale demolition drive at Garib Nagar, a densely populated slum near Bandra railway station in Mumbai's east, targeting unauthorized structures ncroaching on railway land in close proximity to the tracks.
The operation, scheduled to run until May 23, is being carried out under a recent Bombay High Court order permitting Western Railway to proceed with the clearance while directing authorities to ensure protection of residents declared eligible as Project Affected Persons in the 2021 survey.
Heavy earth-moving machinery, including JCB excavators, was deployed at the site as structures and accumulated debris were cleared. Around 400 security personnel, including Mumbai Police in riot gear, Railway Protection Force, and Government Railway Police, were stationed at the location alongside fire brigade units and ambulances to maintain order throughout the operation.
The drive aims to remove encroachments built dangerously close to the Western Railway corridor to improve track safety and enable smoother train operations. Similar clearance operations have been conducted in the Garib Nagar area on previous occasions.
