Switzerland shock World Champions France to reach Quarter Finals

After Spain overcame Croatia 5-3 in an eight goal thriller, the other game on Monday didn't disappoint as well as Switzerland came from 3-1 down in dying minutes to draw 3-3 at the night and win 5-4 on penalties after extra time failed to separate them.

Switzerland took a surprising lead in the 15th minute as Haris Seferovic rose high to beat French Defender Lenglet to head in a cross from Steven Zuber.

The Swiss then had a golden chance to make it 2-0 as they were awarded a penalty by VAR for a challenge on Zuber in the 51st minute. Ricardo Rodriguez stepped up and missed the penalty as Hugo Lloris tipped it away.

The pendulum then swinged in France's way as two quick fire goals within the space of two minutes from Karim Benzema turned the game over it's head in the 59th minute.

Paul Pogba then added a third for the World Champions as the midfielder curled an absolute beauty of shot which found its way in the top right hand corner to make it 3-1 in the 75th minute.

It looked as if France had done enough to go through. Switzerland though inspired from the earlier Spain Vs Croatia game, staged a comeback. Seferovic headed in this second goal of the night in the 81st minute.

The sixth goal of a flying contest came in the 90th minute as Mario Gavranovic reached to Granit Xhaka's defence splitting pass through the middle to smash it pass through Lloris into the bottom left hand corner to force extra time for the second time on Monday.

Following a goal less extra time, the match was then decided by the dreaded penalty shootout. With the scores at 5-4 in Switzerland's favor, Kylian Mbappe was the last one to step up for France. The Forward somehow missed his spot kick as his effort was too close to Yann Sommer who got his left hand to save it and send his side through to the Quarter Finals.
