Lionel Messi gets sent off as Athletic Bilbao win the Spanish Super Cup

 

The second headline fixture of the weekend was the Spanish Super Cup Final between FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao as the teams came out with a chance to get their hands on the first silverware this season.

Off the Pitch Barcelona are in all sorts of troubles. Presidency Elections,Bankruptcy,The Future of Lionel Messi etc was all in doubts. The Catalonian Club had a chance to forget all that for a moment and give their fans something to cheer about.

It was Barcelona who strucked first. Messi's was played through by an incisive through ball from Alba. His short was blocked and it deflected straight to Antoine Griezmann who made no mistake to drill the effort into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 in the 40th minute.

Athletic Bilbao replied immediately. Inaki Williams played out a stunning chip over the defence and his effort was well rewarded as  Oscar De Marcos stabbed a smart finish beyond Ter Stegen in the 42nd minute.

Athletic had a goal ruled out by VAR in the 57th minute for offside. Raul Garcia's headed intially standed but after consulting the VAR, he was seen offside and the goal was chalked off and the score remains 1-1.

Barcelona took the lead again in the 77th minute through a second goal from Antoine Griezmann. A lovely one-two from Dembele and Alba allowed the later to cross the ball that was steered in from close range to make it 2-1.

Munian whose earlier free kick was chalked out for offside, finally got his assist after his another free kick was stabbed into the back of the net by substitute Asier Villalibre to make it 2-2 in the 90th minute. The game finished 2-2 in normal time and extra time was required.

Athletic then took the lead in the 93rd in extra time after Inaki Williams after bending an effort beyond Ter Stegen's reach to make it 3-2 for Athletic Bilbao. Munian registered his second assist of the final in that process.

Barcelona tried and tried but were unable to get the equalizer. In the 120th minute, Lionel Messi recieved his first red card of his Barcelona Career after he elbowed Molina in the buildup process and was sent off after a check from the VAR.
